Are you currently unemployed because of the pandemic? There is a high chance that you are. Millions of people have lost their jobs and economics in many sectors is failing right now.

Losing your job can be devastating and extremely demotivating, as it is a big part of your life. It provides you with salary, a social circle, daily routine and so on. Furthermore, for many people, their job also provides a significant source of their identity.

If you’re going through this, the most important thing is not to lose hope and keep your mental health in a good state! Here are some things you can do to soften the circumstances in such a situation.

  1. Validate the difficulty

One of the most important things to do is treat yourself with kindness and warmth during hard times. Be compassionate to yourself. You have every right to feel sad, anxious, or angry. You are human and it’s only natural to have such feelings when going through something like this.

  1. Accept the reality

There are lots of things we have learned to accept in life – traffic, unfairness, disappointments, and pandemics. Accepting reality means recognizing that “it is what it is” – without thinking too much about it. Even if it is hard to accept what is happening, if you consciously do this, it’ll be easier to progress further.

  1. Normalize the problem

Just by watching the news you will quickly come to the conclusion, that you are not alone. Millions of people are in the same situation. Everyone has it differently and some are worse than other but thinking about it in this way will help you look at things from a broader perspective.

  1. Schedule some fun for yourself

Yes, you are unemployed, but this doesn’t mean you have to be sad and do nothing all the time. Keep yourself busy by scheduling daily activities that are interesting, fun or challenging for you.

What is that one thing that you would do if you “just had time”? Well, news flash, now you have the time. Maybe it is creating a garden in your yard, finishing that drawing, learning a new language, or taking up writing.

You can also exercise more rather than binge watch Netflix. You may as well make use of the time at your disposal now, because when you are back to work, you will regret not using it properly when you had the chance.

  1. Improve your skills

Looking for ways to increase your job skills while unemployed is a good way to move forward as well. Look for online certifications or trainings you can take. If you’re on a tight budget, there are amazing resources out there that are free.

You should try to expand your skillset and also look beyond your technical skills and put some emphasis on soft skills as well.

Whatever you choosе, keep in mind that NOW is the best time for improvement.

  1. Ask for help (if needed)

Losing your job influences you and your life, but it also affects others who depend on you. It’s not necessary to go through the sadness and hard times alone. Your family would never want to watch you suffer and feel helpless.

You can always ask them for ideas and help. You may be surprised by their level of support and the suggestions they make. And even if they can’t give you direct help, they will also help you indirectly by giving you the ability to share your pain and lighten the load you’re carrying.

Reach out to your business acquaintances. You never know where a discussion with one contact can lead to another, and possibly a new job. Maybe you don’t want to do it because you feel ashamed at the stigma of unemployment. Don’t let this hesitation hold you back. The people in your social network are much more likely to help you than you think they are.
